Concert Season

Scan334.jpg (55447 bytes)

Pamlico Musical Society is very pleased to announce our artist lineup and performance schedule for the 2007-2008 season.   The Musical Society’s mission is to bring professional-level musical entertainment to Pamlico County and to enhance the understanding and appreciation of music through informational programs for children and adults.

We are looking forward to a very busy season.  For the first time the series will consist of ten concerts, with twelve groups performing.  The season will include a free concert as well as youth and community outreach offerings.  The ten-concert series is sure to please many as it focuses on A Little Traveling Music.  Our audiences have shown a preference for diverse musical genres and this series will explore diverse forms of musical traditions, from the sounds of cabaret, jazz, folk and blue grass to the sounds of Chopin and Beethoven.  From the upbeat sounds of American roots to the richness of European classical genres, the season will showcase many of the flavors of music we enjoy.   A very special event this year will be the Oriental Folk Festival – a two concert weekend, featuring four artists.  Unless otherwise noted, all concerts will take place in the Pamlico County Civic & Cultural Center in Oriental.

September 14th, 2007:

7:30PM Concert

Lynne Jackson &
Mike Palter:
The Cabaret Consortium

Our season opens on Friday September 14th with Mike Palter and Lynne Jackson – the Cabaret Consortium.  Jazz, cabaret favorites and contemporary numbers will be presented with sophistication and style by this duo.   Internationally-acclaimed jazz/cabaret artists Jackson and Palter are among the most original and creative vocal duos performing today. Their sophistication and style is evident in their exquisite interpretations of both classics from the Great American Songbook and musical gems from more contemporary composers like Dave Frishberg and Stephen Sondheim.  Both Lynne and Mike do something that many quite good singers have never in the lives been able to do… and that is to convey emotion, the heart-stopping, soul-lifting emotional message of the original work of art.

October 13th, 2007:

7:30PM Performance at Pamlico County High School

The Greencards

On October 13th, The Greencards, with two Australians and an Englishman who are at the nexus of bluegrass, country and pop will perform.  When speed doesn't kill, it can thrill, and the lightning-strike success of The Greencards has been decidedly of the latter variety. To be them is to be on a rocket ship disguised as a touring van, on a highway where there are no speed limits. Four short years ago, a green card was an immigration document. Now The Greencards are an acoustic music phenomenon that has played around the world, headlined major festivals, won awards, and toured with Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson.  This performance will be at the Pamlico County High School Auditorium.

The Arman Trio

November 9th, brings The Arman Trio to Oriental. Hailed by Le Point (Paris) as a "meeting at the summit," The Arman Trio has performed regularly in Europe and in the USA since 1998.  The Trio is a fusion of three successful careers. Their friendship and collaboration in various ensembles had already started in 1985 in Paris. Their "poetic, impassioned and incisive performances" have won them accolades from the press and standing ovations from audiences.  Their style reflects the best chamber music traditions from Central Europe with elegant French panache. Since 1998, The Arman Trio has been touring regularly throughout North America and has performed several times at New York’s Carnegie Weill Hall.

Oriental Folk Festival

November 30th - December 1st.   Join us for the first annual Oriental Folk Festival featuring four outstanding singer-songwriter artists and their bands.   Looking to the future, the Musical Society hopes that this annual event will be a venue for talented creators and performers of folk, roots, blues, gospel, acoustic and world music traditions.

Please note that the Folk Festival will include two concerts, Friday and Saturday nights, with two performances each night.  Both evenings, the performances will start at 7 pm.

the everybodyfields

The headliner for the evening of Friday, November 30th, will be the everybodyfields.  From Tennessee, this group that makes music channeled through decades of folk and country traditions inspired by Appalachia. The everybodyfields is an independent folk/country band from Johnson City, Tennessee. The band is fronted by Sam Quinn and Jill Andrews who met nine years ago while both working at a summer camp and most recently, guitarist and keyboardist Josh Oliver. the everybodyfields combine country, folk, bluegrass, rock and roll, and Americana to produce a unique sound that Harp Magazine called "stompin’ and twangin’ in world-class style".

Arlington Priest

A duo from Georgia, Arlington Priest, will open the evening of November 30th with their own special brand of folk tunes. With music that is bittersweet, heartbreaking and ever evolving, Jill McAllister’s voice evokes ghosts of 60's female singer songwriters - strong yet vulnerable - capable of belting it out or quietly crooning to a whisper, without losing its emotive force. Rhett McAllister’s guitar and vocals are resonating and grounding, bringing to mind the warmth of a blanket wrapping around you on a cold stormy night.

As always, Pamlico Musical Society integrates community outreach elements with the series concerts, including pre-concert lecture/demonstrations and in-school performances and workshops.  No admission is charged for these outreach programs. In addition, many of the musicians in the series will offer commentary from the stage during their performance. Finally, Musical Society members will continue to meet the artists in informal post-concert receptions. Membership in the Society may be obtained by making a contribution.

Remember, the first concert is September 14 at 7:30 p.m.  Season ticket forms are available at the Croakertown Gift Shop in Oriental, Buckhorn Books in Bayboro, and Bank of the Arts in New Bern. Musical Society members also have an opportunity to purchase individual tickets early.  To make it even easier to get tickets we are introducing electronic ticketing for the coming season.  Tickets may be purchased on-line by going to On-Line Tickets.

A season subscription includes a choice of five or more concerts plus a free performance by the ECU Symphony.  All tickets are $15.00.  However, a season subscription offers a $3.00 discount off each selected event price. Each year many of the Society’s performances sell out.  Season tickets are a good investment for those wanting to be sure to attend their favorite events. Individual concert tickets go on sale to the public about three weeks prior to the performance.

Pamlico Musical Society is a local nonprofit organization.  In addition to our concert performances, we sponsor music education events and a youth music program to enrich the opportunities and experiences of school-aged young people in Pamlico County.   Support from Society members, area businesses, the Pamlico County Arts Council and the North Carolina Arts Council, an agency funded by the State of North Carolina and the National Endowment for the Arts, make these events possible.
